What is GMI vs Non GMI
When referring to "GMI" across this transparency page, GMI stands for Group Member Involved. Non GMI is any shooting classifaction not related to group violence.
Why "group" instead of gang?
According to the National Network for Safe Communities, an exclusive focus on gangs, which is often understood to include notions like organization and leadership, will exclude a significant number of groups that contribute heavily to serious violence, such as loosely affiliated neighborhood drug crews.
Therefore, group member involved shootings are included in the stats throughout this page.
What is a custom notification?
Serious violence can be reduced when law enforcement, community members, and social service providers join together to engage directly with violent street groups and clearly communicate 1) a credible, moral message against violence; 2) a credible law enforcement message about the group consequences of further violence; and 3) a genuine offer for those who want it.
Custom notifications are conversations with group members that they are valued members of the community, give individualized information about their legal risk, and offer opportunities for help to break the cycle of violence.
These counts are only reflective of the City of South Bend's notifications and not those of S.A.V.E. or other GVI partners.
