BUTTIGIEG, CITY OFFICIALS TO CUT RIBBON AT NEW FIRE STATION #4

Mayor Pete Buttigieg, South Bend Fire Chief Steve Cox, and District 2 Common Councilmember Regina Williams-Preston will cut a ceremonial ribbon to open the new South Bend Fire Station #4 on Tuesday, June 12 at 12:45 p.m. at 220 N Olive Street. There will be refreshments and an open house following the ceremony.

The new building will replace the current Fire Station #4 located at 220 N Olive Street. Station 4 was built in 1974 and originally housed Engine 4, Engine 11, and Snorkel 2 after closing the original Station #4 at 1240 W Thomas Street. Fire Station #4 has housed several ambulances over the decades, and the station has operated with Engine 4, Medic 4, and Medic 5 in recent years.

Fire Station #4 is the first City-owned building in South Bend designed with green standards registered to achieve LEED certification. The new station’s innovative design will decrease the building’s energy consumption by about 40 percent compared to similar buildings, and solar panels will decrease the building’s energy consumption further by an average of 7 percent per year. In addition, landscaping around the fire station will use plant species native to the region to eliminate the need for irrigation and sprinkler systems, decreasing water consumption. Fire Station #4 was also constructed with a high percentage of recycled content, and innovative construction strategies diverted waste produced during construction away from landfills and prevented unnecessary loss of soil.

In addition to increased sustainability, Fire Station #4 will also improve personnel safety. Through multiple tactics, the station will limit cross contamination of “hot zones”—areas exposed to carcinogens and other contaminants that could increase mortality rates.
