MAYORS, COUNTY PARKS ANNOUNCE COMMUNITY-WIDE BIKE EVENT

Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Mayor Dave Wood, in conjunction with St. Joseph County Parks Director Evie Kirkwood will hold a press event to announce the first annual Mayors’ Bike Ride on Thursday, March 24 at 10 am at Central Park, 295 E. Mishawaka Avenue. The park lies between Mishawaka Avenue the St. Joseph River, just east of Main Street.

“The Mayors’ Ride is a great opportunity to get families back on their bikes and enjoying the outdoors,” says South Bend Mayor Buttigieg. “As our community’s bike culture continues to grow, the Mayors’ Ride is a chance to highlight what terrific trails and places we have to enjoy on a bike.”

The Mayors’ Bike Ride will be held from 7-11 am on Sunday, May 22. The family-friendly, recreational ride will begin at three locations: Red Barn, St. Patrick’s County Park; Howard Park, South Bend; and Central Park, Mishawaka. The route, which mostly follows trails along the St. Joseph River, may be found here.

“What a great way for Mishawaka, South Bend, and St. Joe County to showcase our parks and bike trails,” says Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood. “Biking is for people of all ages and this is a perfect opportunity for families to kick start a healthier lifestyle at this family-friendly event.”

The event is free of charge, though a $10 per person donation is suggested to help Bike Michiana Coalition with their many education initiatives. All riders must also fill out a waiver.

Sponsored by Visit South Bend Mishawaka and Bike Michiana Coalition, a non-profit bicycle-advocacy organization, the Mayors’ Ride will also focus on bicycle safety education for children. A series of workshops will be held leading up to the May 22 event that will teach children how to ride safely in and near traffic.

The Mayors’ Ride encourages bicyclists of all ages to enjoy South Bend’s, Mishawaka’s and St. Joseph County’s connected bikeways and bicycle-friendly infrastructure.

Participants are encouraged to register for the event here.
