A green job contributes to the decarbonization of our economy, the resilience of our community, and the restoration of our environment (definition is adapted from Green New Careers). As more communities throughout Indiana, the U.S. and the globe commit to a carbon-neutral future, green job opportunities are expected to increase. What are some examples? Green Buildings and Energy Efficiency Developing the energy efficiency workforce is a priority for the city, given that 60% of South Bend’s greenhouse gas emissions come from the energy used in our buildings. According to the 2021 U.S. Energy Employment Report, there are currently more than 49,000 energy efficiency jobs in Indiana. Weatherizing homes, improving the efficiency and automation of HVAC systems, upgrading lighting, and more will be key to moving towards a clean energy future. Solar Energy South Bend needs a robust solar economy to meet our renewable energy transition goals. There are currently over 3,000 jobs in the solar industry in Indiana. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, Indiana ranks 4th in the nation in terms of growth projects, with 6,746 MW of solar expected to be installed in the state over the next 5 years.
