LOOSE LEAF PICKUP

Update 4-12-10

The Department of Public Works, Division of Streets will continue loose-leaf pickup for one additional week, April 12 -15.  Residents can simply call Streets at 235-9244 to schedule a pickup.  All leaves should be raked to the curbline, but not into the street.  Pickup should occur within 24 hrs after the call is received.  This is the fifth and final week for loose-leaf pickup.

The Bureau of Solid Waste will also collect bagged leaves and other yard waste, on a call-in basis through next week.  For pickup, please call 277-8823.

Beginning April 19, all yard waste pickup will occur automatically on the regular trash pickup day.  All leaves and yardwaste should be placed at the curb by 6am for pickup.

In South Bend, all yardwaste is recycled at the city's Organic Resource facility.  Help build a Green City by recycling your yard waste.

Update: 3-29-10

The City of South Bend has announced that Operation Spring ReLeaf will be continued for an additional two weeks, through April 8.  According to Sam Hensley, Director of Streets, "our crews responded to over 85 call-ins for pickup last week. We appreciate the community's efforts to clean-up the remaining leaves and our goal is to complete this as soon as possible before our crews begin our in-house paving and repair program."  Leaf pickup and recycling (at Organic Resources) is an important part of South Bend's Clean City effort.

All residents are encouraged to rake their loose leaves to the curb, and then call the Division of Street at 235-9244 for pick-up.

YARD WASTE PICKUP

Bagged leaves and bagged or bundled yard waste pickup is also available, on a call-in basis, through the Division of Solid Waste until Thursday, April 16.  The automatic program (no call-in necessary) will begin Monday, April 19.  Please call the Bureau of Solid Waste at

277-8823 to schedule a pickup.

LOOSE- LEAF PICKUP GUIDLINES

Please follow these guidelines for loose-leaf pickup:

  • Do not allow children to play in leaf piles near the curb.
  • Do not contaminate leaf piles with debris (sticks, trash, etc.).  Street crews are unable to collect these piles with vacuum trucks.  It will be the owner's responsibility to dispose of contaminated piles.
  • Do not rake leaves into the street.  Avoid parking in front of leaf piles to allow access for pick-up.
  • There will be no loose leaf pick-up in alleys.

NOTE:  Residents are reminded that in order to protect our air quality, burning of leaves is completely prohibited in the City of South Bend and is a violation of City ordinance.

YARD WASTE PICKUP

Bagged leaves and bagged or bundled yard waste pickup is also available, on a call-in basis, through the Division of Solid Waste until Thursday, April 16.  The automatic program (no call-in necessary) will begin Monday, April 19.  Residents are also reminded to be sure that all yard waste: leaves, branches, etc. is clear of any animal waste.  Animal waste will contaminate the recycling of leaves and yard waste for production of organic mulch.  All yard waste must be bagged or bundled and placed at the curb, there is no alley pickup for yard waste.  Please call the Bureau of Solid Waste at 277-8823 to schedule a pickup.

Please follow these guidelines for the Yard Waste Program:

  • Please place yard waste at curbside in bags or containers, by 6:00 a.m., and separate it from trash and debris.
  • Yard waste and brush must be bagged or bundled (no more than 4 feet in length or 1 foot above edge of container).
  • Please use suitable containers (30 gallon trash container or smaller) - do not place yard waste in City automated trash containers or the Borden recycling containers.
  • Do not place yard waste in the alley.
