  Profile :: Lincoln Plaza

Northwest Side

This pretty, little neighborhood sits just southeast of South Bend Regional Airport , north and west of the busy streets of Lincoln Way West and Bendix Drive. It features huge trees, wide streets and block after block of immaculate homes with manicured lawns. Almost every home has flower beds, pots of flowers or holiday decorations of some type. Visitors to Lincoln Plaza will see neighbors working in the yard, children’s toys waiting for nap time to end and receive a friendly wave to passers-by.

Housing styles are mostly one-story modified Cape Cods – a mix between a ’50s ranch and a typical Cape Cod. Most of the homes have been updated with new windows and siding. Many have additions. These homes were built with great quality in the mid-20th century and have withstood the test of time well.

The neighborhood features a nice mixture of long-time residents and younger families, drawn by affordability, accessible location and neighborly connections. Many children who grew up here move back to the neighborhood.

“We moved here three years ago and just love it,” one neighbor said. “Everyone knows everyone; it is a very friendly atmosphere.” Her teenage son echoed the sentiment. She pointed to a neighbor walking down the street. “His parents just live two streets over and he visits them frequently”.

“This neighborhood has stood the test of time,” another neighbor said. “We have really enjoyed living here.”

Moms push strollers and walk toddlers to Ryer Mini Park in the heart of the neighborhood. Ryer consists of 1.10 acres and is perfect for the little ones. It has swings, a merry-go-round, teeter totter and a jungle gym.

Voorde Park, named after one of South Bend’s mayors, anchors the north end of the neighborhood. It is a much larger park with 14 acres, featuring a basketball court, a baseball field, tennis courts, a merry-go-round and a slide.

The excellent Dickinson Fine Arts Academy is just minutes away as is Coquillard Primary Center and St. John the Baptist Catholic Grade School.

This neighborhood is part of the Lincoln Way West Gateway Association. Prices are a bargain at the mid-$60,000s to high $70,000s.
