My name is Valerie Schey. I grew up in Morton Grove, IL in a blue collar, middle class family. My Dad worked in a factory and my Mom worked as a waitress. I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor’s Degree in biology in 1991.
I have worked for two large, multinational companies ( IBM and GlaxoSmithKline) in Sales and Marketing and I have established and managed one small, not for profit organization (CARE of South Bend, www.careofsouthbend.org).
My parents raised me and my two sisters with patriotic values and a strong work ethic. My parents were very committed to serving our community and helping others. My Father served as a union steward for the UAW and my Mother volunteered her time to help children with Muscular Dystrophy. Through their example I leaned the importance of civic duty and service.
My husband and I moved to South Bend from Glenview, IL in 2005. I have been actively volunteering at South Bend Animal Care and Control since 2008. I served as the citizen member of the Health and Public Safety sub-committee of the South Bend Common Council in 2009 and 2010. I have volunteered at a number of local, community events including: Art Beat 2009 and 2010, The TCE annual Kids Triathlon hosted at Potawatomi Park and the Sunburst Marathon 2009 and 2010.
I have also organized and hosted various community events such the Run Ten Ten 10K Race and 2 Mile Mutt Strut, the Howard Park Howl-O-Ween Pet Parade and Party, The Dog Days of Summer at the Colfax Cultural Center, Operations Santa Paws and the College Football Hall of Fame and Earth Day/Arbor Day at Howard Park.
When I am not volunteering at the animal shelter or working on a project for CARE of South Bend I enjoy spending time with my husband, running, reading non-fiction books about U.S. and world history and playing with our three dogs.
