South Bend's Wastewater Treatment Facility is a conventional activated sludge plant. Nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients are removed biologically in the activated sludge bio-mass. The treatment plant is designed to treat an average flow of forty-eight million gallons per day (48 MGD). In 2002, an average flow of 37.0 MGD was treated. The lowest average monthly flow in 2002 was 25.2 MGD, and the highest average monthly flow was 64.2 MGD.
An Eye To Tomorrow: With the completion of the Wastewater Treatment Plant's expanded facilities, the river is rapidly returning to its natural state. More and more families will be able to enjoy its beauty and the opportunities it offers for fishing, boating and recreation, now and for generations yet to come.
The people of South Bend can take pride in the progress we have made in restoration of our river. We also must understand that the work is not completed. A growing population and ever-higher pollution control standards make it necessary to consider the upgrading of our treatment efforts. As improvements become necessary, we will strive for the greatest economy and take advantage of the latest technology.
Our constant objective is the preservation of the St. Joseph River, one of our City's most precious assets.
