The City of South Bend started a Combined Sewer Overflow Notification Program in January, 2004 to inform and educate the public of the health impacts and potential dangers associated with sewage in waterways. This program notifies the public about the potential occurrence of hazards associated with sewage contamination in the St. Joseph River.
Program Objectives
- Notify interested residents when sewage overflows are likely to occur.
- Educate about the health hazards and impacts associated with sewage in our waterways.
- Enable citizens to take appropriate steps to protect themselves and their families from such hazards.
How to Participate
- Interested citizens and organizations can sign up to receive the notification via email. The email provides information about the current water conditions in the CSO area.
- A telephone hotline, 574.277.8515 ext. 28, delivers a recorded message on the current conditions, and hazards associated with water contact.
- The city added additional signs within the CSO area, notifying the public about the potential occurrence of hazards associated with sewage contamination in the St. Joseph River.
