The Bureau of Public Construction

  • Inspects construction of public facilities
  • Reviews plans and specifications of consultants for Public Works and new subdivisions

The Geographical Information System (G.I.S.)

  • Allows for intelligent maps by using a computer
  • Locations and information about streets and utilities are available via the computer for the analysis and design of sewer and street networks around the City of South Bend

The Bureau of Wastewater

  • Facilitates the collection, treatment and disposal of wastewater.
  • Responsible for the operation of the treatment facility, which is a conventional activated sludge plant, the interceptor sewer system, the combined sewer overflow (CSO) system and the remote sewage lift stations
  • Administers the Residential Sewer Insurance Program

The Bureau of Solid Waste

  • Collects, treats and disposes of residential solid waste (trash & garbage) and public trash containers
  • Additional services offered include the Pick-Me-Up Program for heavy or large item disposal and the Yard Waste Program for recycling of yard debris

The South Bend Water Works

  • Supplies safe, quality drinking water to 122,000 customers in the City of South Bend and its surrounding unincorporated areas
  • The water utility reads water meters and generates a bill each month that includes water, sewer, trash and recycling charges
  • Customer Service staff answer all customer related inquiries and the emergency field service provides 24 hour coverage
  • The utility maintains over 520 miles of water main, 42,000 water meters, four filtration plants, eight well fields and four water storage facilities which hold a total capacity of 17.5 million gallons of water

The Bureau of Equipment Services

  • Purchases, maintains and repairs all of the automobiles, trucks and specialized motorized equipment in the City's fleet
  • Performs inspections of City licensed taxi cabs

The Bureau of Central Purchasing

  • Purchases, maintains and distributes office, janitorial and safety supplies to all City departments
  • Prepares bids for paint, light bulbs and assists with other supply related bids
  • Coordinates purchasing information to vendors on selling to the City

The Bureau of Streets

  • Removes snow on all public streets within the City
    Removes dead animals
  • Street sweeping, maintenance
  • Reconstruction and resurfacing of streets (slurry seal, paving, crack filling, pot-hole repair)
  • Alley grading
  • Alley reconstruction 
  • Fall Operation ReLeaf leaf pick-up program
  • Supervision of Code Enforcement Clean-Up Crew

The Bureau of Municipal Services and
Building Maintenance

  • Maintains the buildings and property located at 701 West Sample Street and 731 South Lafayette.

The Bureau of Sewers

  • Cleans and inspects the 525 miles of storm and sanitary sewer system in the City and suburbs
  • The Sewer Construction Program repairs sewer mains, catch basins and manholes

The Bureau of Traffic and Lighting

  • Maintains, operates and installs traffic signals, pavement markings, signs for traffic control and public information
  • Conducts studies for changes in traffic controls
  • Coordinates traffic control for parades, races, block parties and other special events using streets and public facilities
  • Maintains and operates a portion of the street lighting system and
  • Administers contracted street lighting by the electric utility company
