Training means safety for both Firefighters and the citizens they serve. The South Bend Fire Department Instruction Bureau provides training to both new recruits and present Firefighters. The bureau is overseen by the Battalion Chief of Instruction. Training is one area which places a large demand on a fire department. The South Bend Fire Department excels in this area using proven methods, excellent leadership, and progressive attitudes.
The South Bend Fire Department Instruction Bureau is supervised by the Battalion Chief of Training who is responsible for designing, implementing, and coordinating fire suppression training for all sworn Fire Department members as well as all new recruits. The Instruction Bureau training staff includes a Captain who trains with all 3-shifts. There are also 3-shift instructors, and 3-assistant shift instructors who all work on their 24-hour shifts.
