Council Member Kirsits is beginning the 3rd year of his second 4-year term on the Council, beginning his years of public service on January 1, 2000. He resides with his family at 722 Marquette Avenue, South Bend, Indiana 46617. Council Member Kirsits is a graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, and later earned his master's degree from Indiana University South Bend.
Council Member Kirsits is dedicating his time, talents and efforts to "making South Bend a better place for our families to live." He has established many goals and priorities which are aimed at the more "efficient delivery of city services; working to stem blight; working to make neighborhoods stronger; providing competitive wages to attract and retain competent city employees; controlling unnecessary city spending; and promoting the use and development of the river walk."
Council Member Kirsits sincerely appreciates the dedication of city workers. He sponsored the military leave ordinance which guarantees that fair wages and benefits will continue while a city employee is deployed overseas on a military tour of duty. He believes that families left behind should not suffer financially; and won the unanimous support of the Council when this ordinance was passed and approved by the Mayor. As a direct result of this ordinance, such city employees are guaranteed certain benefits which include the restoration of their city position or a position of like seniority, status and pay upon returning from active duty and qualifying for the city position.
Al "Buddy" Kirsits is a 2nd generation firefighter on the South Bend Fire Department. In addition to serving the citizens of South Bend on the city council, he serves as a Battalion Chief at Fire Station #2 located at 110 East Marion. He began his public safety career in 1979 and has received numerous awards and resolutions for heroism in the performance of his many firefighter duties.
Council Member Kirsits has chaired the Utilities Committee for several years. In this capacity he holds committee public hearings on proposed rate increases for the water and sewer utilities, reviews proposed appropriations and enterprise budgets.
