Derek was elected to the City Council in 2003 and started his term on January 1, 2004. He resides with his family at 4903 Starboard Dr. Council Member Dieter is dedicated to helping improve the quality of life in South Bend.
Since his election Derek has delivered on his major campaign promises of working for "livable neighborhoods."
Derek has:
1. Increased fines for loud car stereo's
2. Started a hot line for these violations
3. Maintained constant dialog with 1st District residents
4. Cell phone number available for immediate contact
5. Worked hard for the River side Trail project
Derek has also worked effectively in his dual role as a Councilman and Police Officer to help clean up neighborhoods of drug and loitering problems.
During has 3 years on the Council Derek has sponsored ordinances on:
1. Changing the Unreasonable Noise Ordinance
2. The stun gun ordinance
3. Scrap metal identification
Derek has also:
Led Council initiative to save the Greenhouse.
Initiated the Council's inquiry about vacant and abandoned homes in South Bend.
Since taking office Derek has also honored 96 citizens, youths, and businesses of the 1st District with recognition for their actions in his district.
"Of all the things I do I find this the most rewarding. To honor people who do good things on a daily basis demonstrates the great people we have in the 1st District. I have been very fortunate to have great neighborhood organizations in my District and their work is evident all over the District".
Derek was recently named Chairperson of Community and Economic Development for the Council by President Tim Rouse. "I will work very hard to encourage new private business and assist current businesses. Right now spearheading economic growth is the biggest challenge this City faces, as a Council representative I will make it my priority to keep businesses from leaving and attract new ones to South Bend."
Derek is very active with our area youth as the head freshman football coach and varsity receiver coach at Adams High School.
