Until the 1990s, the LaSalle Square area of South Bend was a bustling retail district. Shifting economic dynamics have diminished the retail presence, but a rebirth is on the horizon, and the area has the potential to be more diverse and energetic than it ever was.
In 2008, the City of South Bend, along with the LaSalle Square Steering Committee, embarked on a plan to revitalize the area. The area presents a unique opportunity for appropriate retail businesses as well as industrial companies. Distinctive housing, streetscapes, trails and public transportation will once again transform this area into a vital part of the city.
